Do diuretics (water pill) inhibit muscle growth?

I've been taking blood pressure meds for the last 3 years. They contain diuretics (water pill). I recently stopped taking them and put on 9lbs. But that is okay because I know where it came from.
My question is, could taking a water pills all this time have affect my muscle growth since muscles needs water?

I would have thought if you are drinking lots of water ( which you should be ) there wouldn't be much difference as you'd pee it all out. Therefore shouldn't make any difference as to you taking a tablet to encourage water loss.
But your doctor will be able to tell you more.0 -
Muscles need water, but the water pills keep you from retaining excess water. Which is harmful to your heart and other internal organs. Don't be offended, but you stopped taking them under your doctor's advisement, right? I only ask because far too many people do this (my mother is one of them) and it's quite dangerous.
I have high blood pressure and my dream is to get off the meds and regulate it through diet alone. So if you have done so? Hurrah for you. I will be there someday!0 -
@laele75, well half and half. I talked to my doctor about it. She said to wait a little while before I stopped taking them. I waited 2 months, then decided on my own. I have been monitoring my pressure and today it was 102/67 which is the same as it was on the medication.
Lately I've been keeping my sodium levels at half of the MFP recommended and always drink plenty of water even before I stopped taking the pills.0 -

I can only say what I have experienced, so we'll start with that. I take a variety of meds, including a heart medicine and a strong diuretic. I drink a ton of water, and have not had any issues building muscle (no heavy lifting unfortunately it is prohibited, but I use kettlebells) and have seen some nice results lately. If you need them, take them, they shouldn't stop you from seeing results. If you can stop taking them, great! You still shouldn't have any issues with seeing results0
