Suddenly dislike mince

Did it ever happen to you that you suddenly disliked a certain food, and even wonder why it smells so badly? For me it's minced meat. It just has a very yucky smell and overpowering taste. Raw it's not very appetizing, while cooking or eating the prepared thing: ugh!

I honestly don't know if this is related to moving to the Netherlands and how mince is prepared here compared to elsewhere, or something that popped up without specific reason. What kind of mince? I had lamb mince from the market with which I made a spicy Moroccan meatball soup, usually a favourite. half beef and pork mince for various things, lean beef mince for kheema and a few other things. And today i decided to cook ragu bolognese. Which might not have been a good idea. I've not tried pork mince yet as I've not found any.

Do I eat meat: Yes, usually fairly small amounts. I prefer to load up on veggies and rice/potatoes/pasta/etc instead. Would like to be come vegetarian? Hmm.. difficult one. Probably not as my stomach doesn't really like most plant-y protein, and I usually do like the taste of meat.

When we lived in the Netherlands my hubby hated the way chicken smelled, but he is okay with the smell of cooking chicken now that we live in the UK. I suspect there are different rules about animal feed in the Netherlands that affect the way meat smells. My suspicion is fish products in NL animal feeds. Try an organic butcher. If you are in Amsterdam there is a shop called the Groene Weg on the Negen Straatjes.

Yes, I tried supermarket, market stall, organic butcher, Turkish shop (it's just the random way I shop). Same everywhere. It might be down to animal feed. Or that I really don't like mince anymore. I'd not mind trying something like a good-quality steak, but it's a bit above my paygrade :D

I would be curious if you get the odd smell with grass fed beef. Or Texel lamb which would have only grazed on grass.

Actually Texel lamb is a good example about feed affecting flavour. The animals graze exclusively on salt marshes and their meat tastes pre-salted.

Are you getting minced steak or minced meat? If minced meat it could have offal in it which would affect the flavour and smell.

I actually like offal. Always loved haggis. Dunno, the mince smells rotten to me even though it isn’t.

My bolognese tastes ok as it has tons of taste - if I don’t chew on the meaty bits for too long.
