Weight gain is anything you ate calorie wise over maintenance.

    Daily fluctuations are normal.

Eating 3500 calories above your maintenance results in real.weight gain

To correctly judge weight gain (or loss):
    - weigh yourself at the same time every day, in similar circumstances. For example: right after waking up and going to the toilet, only wearing underwear.
    - look at the long term trend over a few weeks. A lot of people here use weight trend apps: Libra, Happyscale... These apps help to look beyond the day to day fluctuations.

The short answer: within a single day, we can never know for sure. We're always changing weight.

The best way to manage this is with a weight trending app - it filters out the "noise."

Rapid weight increases are almost always temporary fluctuations. Long steady increases are the ones to keep an eye on.

Rapid change is not real. If you binge you have a lot more food in your system that a) needs to be digested and b) pooped out. A binge can also lead to more water weight. Mind you, eating above your calories can also lead to a temporary 'decrease' in weight. I know that when I eat a bag of crisps until afternoon the extra fat leads to a visit to the loo before going to bed = less waste in the intestines.

3 kgs would be a 23,150 calorie surplus. If you ate 3,307 calories above maintenance every day for 7 days, then it's fat.
