Sleep Deprivation Programme to cure Insomnia?

I have been enrolled in a "Sleep Programme", referred by my GP (here in the UK), and after analyzing my sleep pattern for seven days they have now come up with my first plan: two weeks of restricted sleep! Which means that I can chose the time I wake up, it has to be the same time each day, for two weeks, but I then have to adjust going to bed, also at the same time, so that I get 5 hours of sleep per night!
It is through the NHS (here in the UK); hence, it is of course based on evidence. More or less, it boils down to making body and brain understand how to get deeper sleep, when you sleep.
Anybody else tried this?
