For an average person optimum is between 7-9 hours per night.

Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to long term health issues.

When I'm hypomanic I'm productive on 4-5 hours per night, but that's me being bipolar and it's not a healthy state to be in.

Highly recommend reading Why We Sleep - by Dr Matthew Walker - he covers the breadth of research related to sleep

One fact that stuck with me - some governments in Europe are offering disability pay for workers who have been on prolonged shift work due to the cumulative effect of sleep deprivation
