Increased Mileage but Gaining Weight?

Hello

I am wondering why I seem to be gaining weight now that I am increasing my mileage/speed for running each week. I’m on a progressive plan that focuses on slowly increasing mileage but also faster pace week over week.

The problem is I am slowly increasing weight- only up about 5 lbs but I don’t understand why. I’m keeping my calorie intake at 1500 daily and logging everything but I feel like my body composition looks “puffier” and I’ve gained a few. Does anyone else know why this would happen? Hormonal? I’m not sure how to combat it.

Thank you in advance!

Weight gain while marathon training is not unusual. Odds are you're eating more than you think. It's really common with runners to eat a little more after a hard workout because you're hungry. You may be retaining more water as well, because your muscles need it to heal and because you're eating more carbs to fuel your runs. Go back to basics and weigh everything you eat and weigh yourself every day to see if you are retaining water on some days. It's also possible that you don't burn as many calories when running as you think. Try eating back only half the calories for a while.
