I would think as long as you're hitting the muscle it could grow?

You have to be gradually and steadily increasing the challenge to the muscle in order to keep encouraging it to grow, not just "hitting it". Weight lifting is by far the most efficient way to do this. Can you do it other ways? Sure, to a certain extent, and up to a certain point.

There are body weight programs you can do, such as You Are Your Own Gym (YAYOG) or Convict Training. You can look them up.

It’s the same as weight training, it just has to get progressively harder/more challenging in order to build muscle. Weights are easier to do this, but it’s not required.
