http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaab-the-dagger/ncaa-denies-kerwin-okoro-hardship-waiver-despite-death-174459243.html

This young man was denied a hardship waiver after transferring universities to be closer to his family after his father dies in December and his brother dies a couple months later.

This is after the initial ruling that disallowed a former marine to play football after participating in an intramural type football league while overseas SERVING HIS COUNTRY. (This ruling has since been overturned and he is allowed to play.) And of course the Johnny "Football" crap. I could go on with a few more dumb antics but I will not. They just burn my broccoli!!

Totally agree! The NCAA is a bunch of hypocritical a-holes. They need to re-write their rule books and move out of the dark ages.

There are few organizations I hold more contempt for than the NCAA. They'll doing anything to keep their free labor force and keep the money rolling in.
  • While the NCAA has made some silly decisions in the past (some rectified and some, not), is it really a huge deal? They aren't saying he can't be on the team, he simply can't compete. He can still attend school on a basketball scholarship and he can still practice with the team. Yes, sitting out for a season stinks but he can still be on scholarship. As a student athlete, his first priority should be the student part. A free education is still free so to me, it's not a huge deal. The NCAA isn't saying he can't transfer let alone be a part of the program.

I'm no NCAA apologist but they have a legitimate reason to require student athletes in historically acadmically underperforming sports to sit out a season of competition.

I fully understand and agree with your point BUT the NCAA needs to be fair across the board for ALL student athletes. It (NCAA) has given a hardship waiver to one athlete to play at a different university after his father was fired as one of the coaches from that previous university. But this young man, that has a more legitimate reason than his father getting fired, is not granted the same waiver.
