Slim fast?

Has anyone had any luck drinking slim fast shakes to lose weight? I had my first slim fast shake today for dinner. It was pretty tasty blended with 2% milk and ice. I also feel quite satisfied. Just wondering about other peoples experience with it.

Weight loss is caused by being in a calorie deficit. Slim fast might help you with your calorie deficit. My advice find a plan you'll stick with for life.8

Yeah. I do agree. I guess I’ve been discouraged about my lack of progress and am treating slim fast as something to help me get the ball rollng again. I eat mostly at a calorie deficit but some days have trouble with it and feel like I need something to make it easier.2

Yes, I’ve had great experience with slim fast in the past. I did their plan drinking a shake for bf and lunch with snacks in between and instead of a “sensible” dinner, just ate what I wanted. Though I lost weight quickly I ended up ditching the shakes after I got to goal and used fruit and veggie smoothies in their place. They’re more caloric yes, but I got my veggies and fruits which was more sustainable for me. I think using slim fast gets you motivated bc you see results so fast but you really have to be good at finding healthy replacements for those shakes for The long term. It’s a good “ training” tool in the “ kick off “ stage of a diet.7

There’s lots of products that promise it and all they do is help you achieve a deficit with zero cooking or prep involved. If this is a life long sustainable option for you, go for it! Otherwise, once you’ve ditched the shakes, you’ll need to find meals or whatever to keep you feeling full and still in a deficit.7

Good to hear! So far I’ve just been replacing lunch with a shake and some fruit. I have a “sensible” breakfast and dinner and some snacks. I’m not really expecting to lose a lot of weight this way but really glad to hear you had so much success with it and that there’s there’s a chance I will too. I think I will be able to find suitable replacements for it once I stop because I generally eat healthy to begin with. I just need to eat less I think.5

I personally don't find any shakes that adequately fill me up enough to replace a meal. But I do sometimes use Slimfast or other brands if Im craving chocolate and need something to tide me over. I can also use them as a meal if I have them with some small solid food, like a shake with an apple or a hard boiled egg.
I think if you're just having one a day it's probably fine. I have friends who replaced two meals a day and got sick of them super fast and ended up rebounding hard. As long as you are mindful that they are helping you and not something you're struggling through because you think it's supposed to help10 -
Years ago I once tried Slimfast for a fortnight. I had it twice a day, and tracked everything exactly to give it the best possible chance to work (can't remember why now, must have seemed important at the time).
I was starving and miserable the whole time. I do remember it was in the winter, that won't have helped.
At the end I had lost half a pound.
I learnt the lesson that that kind of plan was not for me. But you don't know until you try, so I hope you find it useful.
If it isn't helpful, remember it isn't you or it that's bad, it's just not for you. Something else will be though.6 -
The main negative is that most people don't find liquid to be very filling/satisfying (one reason shakes are frequently used by those trying to bulk and cram a lot more calories in when not hungry)... so you may be hungry, craving food a short time later despite the calories spent on the shake. For a lot of people, higher volume-lower calorie density food (meals with lots of vegetables, for instance) works better for feeling full without a lot of calories.6

Thanks for all the responses! 😃 I am finding that the shake isn’t filling enough alone so I supplement it with some fruit and a piece of toast and honestly don’t feel as satisfied as I would if I ate a meal with about the same calories. However I really look forward to it because it’s sweet chocolatey and refreshing so I’m enjoying it for the time being. I think it might work as something I can incorporate into a healthy diet so I’ll try it out for a while.6

Name a fad diet and, over the years, I've probably done it. I've lost weight with slim fast (and all the others) and invariably put it back on as it's a quick fix whereby you lose weight but you don't develop sustainable eating habits.
If you need a bit of a kickstart and it makes you feel better to drop a few pounds quickly use it by all means but I would seriously recommend transitioning as quickly as possible to a healthy, well balanced diet that offers you an interesting and satisfying variety of foods that you can live with for the rest of your life.

When slim-fast first came out, it was basically equivalent to chocolate milk and a multi vitamin. Since then, seems like there's more protein which is good. I personally have never found drinks to be satiating no matter what their nutritional content is so I have relied on them as "supplement" only (and handy during times of extreme stress where I tend to seriously under-eat or during a road trip where I just don't want to stop for actual food). As a replacement for a single meal, it's not going to do any harm. Just be a little careful if you are taking vitamin/mineral supplements in addition so that you stay within safe ranges.2

I never used it so can’t say, but a friend always kept it on hand for days when she was very tired, didn’t want to cook, so would probably just drive thru, get a burger and a shake. Instead, she always knew she had her favorite slim fast at home, and could find something to go with it. It helped her, as a crutch. Don’t know the details, but she did lose a lot of weight.9

Slim fast has a new diabetic shake that taste good and I purchased a can in vanilla and I'm going to lose weight with it I've lost at least 15 lb in the past incorporating Slim-Fast into my life I also blends a little fruit in it or drink it plain or put non sweetened cocoa powder into the vanilla shake they taste good to me, I added enough calories to it so it's considered a meal if not I'll leave it as is and consider it a snack.
I do shakes cuz it's easy and convenient for me, if this makes you happy is sustainable for you and you can do it ,do it regardless to any naysayers.2 -

Maybe get a protein powder and make your own. I add glucomannan powder and a bit of almond milk. Then I heat it like hot chocolate. It is very filling, glucomannan is a thickener that is a natural fiber from a root in Japan called Konjac2 -
I’ve tried protein powder in the past but didn’t like the taste. Are there any you can recommend that are tasty?1

PEScience and Quest Nutrition have some good flavors.
On another note as it relates to dieting. I rather enjoy trying different diet styles as a means to keep me interested and to help me find new ways of cooking. I generally find the switch as a refreshing way to continuing my healthy journey even if its not something i will sustain.5 -
Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll look into them. Also good point about keeping things interesting.1
