I'm sure this question has been asked 100times before but I can't find the answer.
How does mapmyfitness calculate steps during a walk or run?
Thanks

Not sure if it changed since I don't use it anymore - thought it used your phone.
That would be the accelerometer chip specifically - which already has built in functions for steps and more.
If not, then it would use GPS for the distance, a user setting for stride length you could likely adjust, and math.
Shoot - the MFP app has the option of selecting a step source and pointing it towards your phone.
But it doesn't attempt distance with those steps like other apps will, nor the GPS tracking available in other apps.
