I just try to log balanced meals, focused on vegetables and a protein. Once you log it, see where the macros fall. If you're short somewhere, fill in what's missing. If over, cut back a little.

When I started tracking macros, I just spent a couple of weeks tracking normally and then I looked to see how far off I was from my goals. In my particular case, I needed more protein and fat and fewer carbohydrates, so I looked to see where I could make adjustments to get me there. Once you have a couple weeks of data, it will be relatively easy to see what foods are helping you meet your goals or giving you more than you want of a certain macronutrient.

Another thing that helps is pre-logging. I log my planned meals the day before, so I can see if I'm too far off my goals and make adjustments. I find this much easier than logging meal by meal and realizing mid-day that I'm not getting enough of something.
