Knee pain when running

Hi all!
So a quick history so that this maybe with make more sense.
I was a competitive runner who suffered from and ED for many years. I was 5’4 and only 85-90lbs (and that was when I was “heavy”). Long story short, I tore my hamstring off the bone and swore to recover so I could become a strong runner. Since then, I have gained up to 140lbs and I am 5’6. It has been 7 months since then. I am trying to get back into running, but both my knees are in pain when I start running. I’m am assuming it is because all of the extra weight I have on me now, while my knees are used to my 90lb frame. Am I too heavy to run now? Do I need to just keep running in discomfort until my knees get used to the weight? I just want to run again, as that is the main reason I wanted to recover in the first place. I don’t know what I will do if I can run BECAUSE of recovering. 😞

You are definitely not too heavy to run. Our stats are very similar and I’m an endurance runner too :)

Start slow. Give your body time to adjust. Start. SLOW. 5 minute run, 2-3 minute walk, repeat. Don’t run everyday. Then, change the intervals (6 run/2 walk, etc.) especially important, run for time, not miles, until you build your base up. Try to get to 30 minutes of running before you worry about how fast you go.

Also, add in some lower body strength training- body weight squats, lunges, single leg squats, dead lifts. Strengthen the muscles that support you.

I have also found adding collagen and glucosamine has helped joint issues.
