Does owning a scale help you or hurt you?

I have always had a scale through my twenties. I weighed myself every morning, regardless of whether or not that was the right thing. Recently my trusty scale stopped working. And for the first while it felt like a little bit of freedom from my weight. Now I wonder if I would stay on track better if I knew the numbers.

So friends, what do you think? Do scales help us stick to our goals or do they make us obsessed with the numbers instead of results?

I weigh myself everyday. I look at the trend and not the daily numbers so much. Get the scales and start obsessing.

I'm a numbers geek, so I think my scale has helped me stay on track. The key is that you can't obsess over fluctuations. If you're someone who freaks out over every minuscule gain, then a scale would not be your friend.

It depends what your relationship with the scale is. Are you going to use it as a helpful tool that indicates trends in your weight loss/gain? Or are you going to obsess over every .5 lb change and use it as an implement of torture? I weigh myself almost every day because I like seeing how things change due to salt intake, TOM, etc. A prolonged increase on the scale tells me I need to check my measurements and how my clothes fit to see if I'm really gaining weight but I won't freak out over every fluctuation. It's just a tool, use it how you see fit.
