MPF vs Noom - thoughts please!

Hi team, I recently started the Noom trial but didn’t really get benefit from the “goal specialist” experience. Logging food and exercise really helped, though - so now here - triying the Premium trial 🙂.
If anyone has any experience with both, or some tips to help enhance the coaching/motivation please comment below. Thanks, Zak

I've done both this year. I really liked NOOM for the tracking; I normally don't like having to log every detail of what I eat, so that was an easy way for me to keep track of what kinds of foods. However, it's true the psychology aspects were pretty hokey, and the support was minimal at best. I had a very inactive group and my coach responded infrequently. So far, I am happy with MFP. The food & exercise tracking is ideal. If you spend a little time looking for the right friends to match up with some of your interests, it seems more personal. I only have a few friends, but they mostly are active users and we are really there for daily support with each other. However, this is definitely not like a social media platform; the app is not super user friendly when it comes to posts and pictures.3

I have been on Noom - it was cute at first, but then I was incredibly annoyed by it. It was teaching me things that I already knew, so I didn't find it particularly helpful in that respect - but perhaps if I had stayed with it longer, maybe it would have given me some new, useful info. I didn't find the support person they assigned me to be of much help/support either. So I was frustrated and I quit before the end of my subscription.
So now I am back here, I'm in a completely different state of mind, and I'm ready to put in the necessary work to achieve my goals. I have found that with some amazing friends here on MFP, the whole process is much easier and more fun.
You are more than welcome to add me as a friend if you'd like.
I wish you the best!2 -
Hello, I was doing Noom too, but as stated above, I got incredibly annoyed by it too. Plus, it was too expensive to continue. What I don’t understand is the caloric difference between the these programs. Noom had me on 1200 calories per day. MFP gives me 1590. That’s a big difference. I walk 2 miles about 4 to 5 times a week for exercise. But 1590 seems a lot for trying to lose 1lb per week.1

Mfp for the win!
As long as you use a scale. I've done it both ways, measuring and scaling... and using a scale was much more accurate and you get to see how much 30g of broccoli really is, or 28 grams of parm cheese.
I'm doing a noom trial now and I like some features. The daily insights is nice, especially the ones for stress. The guy that's supposed to hold me accountable does t say much so hes not much of a coach.
But the large part is this.
Mfp counting calories is hands down easier.
Copy meals, save meals, move food to different meals, create/import recipies etc.
Also, your calories here are customizable too. 1200 is the least amount they(health experts) recommend when trying to loose weight. It equates to about 2lbs a week. Which is considered safe.
Mfp allows you to make the choice of if you want to go that drastic, or if you comfortably want to cut calories by loosing 1, 1.5 whatevers clever.
Noom... doesnt even get some thing scanned in right. I've had to report several things because the calories arent right and I'm staring at the packaging! You cant move food from meal to meal, or save meals, or create recipies.
I honestly dont know how people have been successful with it if you cant log correctly.
Mfp makes it simple and easy.
Hope this helps and good luck to you. Also, get a food scale- they're necessary. Also handy for sourdough making/ or really any kind of baking.2 -
Thanks everyone for the comments and time you’ve invested in thought-out replys. It seems we are on a similar wavelength!
Noom did really help me get started with the initial kick-up-the-backside to change my health/fitness habits but thereafter I think I can achieve my goals with the features of MFP.
Anyone else feel the “goal specialist” had an AI feel to it? I just didn’t feel like I’d had a conversation with a person - only a message or two a day based on the articles of that day. There were definitely no SMART targets set or agreed between us! I think that’s what ultimately helped take the decision to cancel my subscription.
If anyone else has any other experiences (positive or negative), feel free to add to the thread for others.
I dont want to bash Noom (my sister-in-law lost 23 pounds [nearly 2 stone of youre in UK 🙂]). It’s helped get me started, but just wasn’t right for me and my long term goals.1
