Why would I get "Unknown user" when messaging someone?

Hi,
I'm not Getting Started with MFP but I just sent my first message. I get a red "Unknown user" error when I put in their name (yes, I'm entering it correctly, including letter casing).

Other than messages - and publicly posting - is there more than one way to friend people on here? When I use the link with the following format...

https://www.myfitnesspal.com/friends/new/USERNAME

It works for every single user I test to generate a "Send Friend Request To USERNAME" page...except for the one user I'm actually trying to get in touch with.

This person has posted in the past 24 hours so...Why?

This or possibly because MFP is quite buggy and prone to timeouts. I doubt I see less than 30 error messages a week. Some of them are the 'unknown user" message when clicking on the profile of someone that JUST posted.

This particular user account wasn't deleted/banned and the user has been active today (even since starting this thread).

It could be that MFP is buggy. It could be that I've been "blocked." It could be...who knows?

But thanks for chiming in, you two. I really appreciate it.

Guessing that they have this set to "myself only" .... maybe ??
