TOM Water Retention

I know this has been asked about a lot but I'm really needing some reassurance. 12 or 13 days ago I had the sudden gain in weight overnight. Ten days ago I started my period. It lasted four days. Now, my weight is still at the same amount as it jumped to almost two weeks ago. My stomach is still extra squishy and my measurements are still up. I know it's water and not real weight but is it normal to hold on to it for so long? Normally it goes away for me right after I start, within two days. How do I get rid of it without pills? It's really starting to upset me (I had a goal for today that I'm fairly sure I reached but this extra 3 kg of water won't let me see for sure).

Normal will vary person to person. I tend to gain the day of or after starting, and the gain sticks around for 10+ days then a woosh when everything catches up.
You may retain during ovulation and/or menstruation, but your actual pattern may not be the same as someone else's.
Personally I do not stress over water weight - as I know its not 'real' weight. I'm focused on fat loss, and overall health/fitness/well-being. I make sure I'm hydrated enough, but other than that, I know eventually the scale will show a new low # if I just keep going.
For this reason, it can be useful to NOT be in the habit of setting weight loss goals in terms of time. If one has an objective to reach a goal weight in 3 months, is it a failure if it actually takes 4 or 5 months? In my opinion, no. Instead look to nonweight victories, and to how you've progressed over time. If I am healthier and/or more fit now than several months ago: good!0 -
I sometimes have water retention during/around my period, but I have yet to discern any predictable pattern. It is what it is.
I would just focus on drinking enough fluids and, if you think it might be an issue, not consuming too much sodium. Aside from that, just a waiting game0
