Alleve and Hunger Signals

I just wanted to pass this along in case it helps someone else, because I was really surprised.

I have hip pain that wakes me up at night. I started taking two alleve before bedtime, and slept like a baby the first week.

BUT, after that first week, I started waking up with intense hunger pangs. I couldn’t sleep. I was starving. I ate way over calories a couple of days last week trying to assuage the hunger pangs. It didn’t help.

I’ve been counting and diarying for two years now and never had the first pang til they hit me like a sledgehammer, so this didn’t make sense at all.

The only thing I’ve changed recently is taking the two alleve. I stopped immediately.

The hunger pangs ceased.

I mentioned this to my trainer and she said the same identical thing had happened to her husband, a former world champ power lifter. She called over one of the other lifters, who it turns out is an othopaedic surgeon. (How convenient is that?!)

He said this is correct. Alleve doesn’t flush out and will build up in your system. This can cause gastric distress, which I probably mistook as hunger pangs. He suggested switching to a topical cream form of Alleve rather than the oral tablets.

Anyway, I thought this was fascinating and worth sharing. People often post here about hunger pangs, and we respond with the usual hydration, protein, IF, yada yada yada suggestions.

But it might be something as simple as an OTC painkiller.

It sure felt like hunger to me.

Naproxen sodium can also cause water retention. When I was on prescription levels of it, I gained a pound a day in water weight for a week!

I hope the topical works for you and your hip feels better soon!

Oh wow. I hadn’t even thought of that! I’ve been feeling particularly bloated lately, too. *smacks self upside head*

I will gain water weight if I take Ibuprofen (which is also an NSAID). l will have to pay attention next time I take any and log that on my food diary to see if I can correlate it to increase in appetite myself. Thanks for the info!
