I keep beating myself up over poor diet choices and weight fluctuations. I gain three to four pound daily and it drives me insane. I can’t seem to keep my weight down like I had been. How do you stop yourself from getting frustrated over mistakes and feeling like there is no point?

You'd have to be making huge mistakes over a period of time to put on 3-4 in a day.

Are you weighing yourself one time per day? Preferably after your morning bathroom break but before eating.

Water weight fluctuations are probably what's going on, and the more weight you need to lose the larger are the fluctuations in water. Here, this is a frequently linked (and very good) article about it:

You look happy as can be, downright cheerful. This could be a side effect of enjoying yourself and having whopping boatloads of fun.

Is there any part of your life that you are absolutely perfect? I assume not, so why would you be perfect when it comes to food?

I have imperfectly lost more than 250 pounds. I made many mistakes. I even chose to eat my maintenance calories some days.

Weight loss is not fragile. It is a simple energy equation. It works as long as you are doing what you should (or close to it) most days... not all days.

Sounds like you need to review your plan though. If adherence is difficult have you added unnecessary requirements?

My weight has fluctuated up and down (sometimes in excess of 10 pounds) throughout the 2.5 years I have been losing. However when I am in an overall deficit when it goes up it is temporary. It will go back down and even lower than before given time.

You aren’t gaining 3-4 lbs in a day just like you aren’t losing 3-4 lbs a day. Is your scale reliable? Do the batteries need to be changed? Is it on carpeting or a solid surface?

Are you weighing and tracking your foods? Are you going to way over in calories everyday? Or just eating foods that cause a lot of water retention?

Do you mean you're going up 3-4 pounds and then down and then back up? I would say that is totally normal. I've been maintaining since 2015 and that whole time I've been bouncing around in a certain weight range.

If you mean you're gaining 3-4 pounds, maintaining that for a while, and then gaining another 3-4 pounds? Well, a consistent upward trend is a sign that you need to adjust your behavior.

Either way, I'd say there is a point to trying to manage our weight. We live our lives in a specific physical body and the way that body functions can have huge influences on our life -- how good we feel, the activities we can enjoy, and even how long we'll end up living. I see the difference extra weight makes in the difference of my older friends and relatives as compared to those who maintain a lower body weight. I want to be active and enjoying my favorite activities for as long as possible.
  • It's funny, because I was just worried about my weight fluctuations, but now that I've seen this it gives me so much relief!

We all go through it for one reason or another!

I weighed myself yesterday in the morning after going to the bathroom and I was at 136.0
I weighed myself today in the morning after going to the bathroom and I was at 140.6

The difference - salt intake for dinner + (yummy) pasta and started my period

edit to add the (yummy) :)
