Macros are carbohydrates, protein, and dietary fat. They make up your calories...1 gram of carb is 4 calories...1 gram of protein is 4 calories...1 gram of fat is 9 calories.
Macros don't really matter so much for losing weight, calories are overwhelmingly what matters outside of medical conditions for losing weight. Macros are a personal preference and matter more for fitness performance and being satiated and to some degree body composition...3 -
I have been doing Macros since August 10, and I think that for some people, me included, is nice to have the flexibility (and structure) of this diet and the "fast" results. Any diet will work if you are in calorie deficit, you will lose the wieght, but I don't agree with cwolfman in his comment that macros don't really matter, they matter even more if you're going to follow an exercise program with along with the nutrition change, because the diet will give you the nutrients you body will be needing.

Calories are what matters for weight loss, but you should be aware of your macros and get enough protein and fat in your diet.
Don’t get so caught up in macros though that you drive yourself nuts trying to hit the perfect number on each one.2
