Calculations are super off...help!

Okay so I've been walking ALOT! I have a pedometer that is logging my mileage at 4.19miles daily with about 300 calories burned. When I calculated via mapquest it says my path was a total of 7.76 miles. Then I read that google earth is accurate soi did that and my total there is 5.9 miles per day.... MFP calculates my calories burned at over 900 for the miles I'm walking....but many
Have said that is wayyyyy too much...

So which one do I believe? I cannot buy a hrm because I'm so broke that my money goes where it needed not where I want it to go, and the site someone else gave me gives me a calorie burn of 450 for the 5.9 I walk. I don't know which one to take into account and I defiantly do not want to overheat based off of the wrong info.... Please help.

I'm walking 1.5 miles in 25 a 30 mins each way four times daily. For a total of 5.9 daily according to google... Pushing a 30lb baby in a 15 lb stroller in the hot hot sun following a six year old to school on his bike, I run and walk doing so lol... Help!

I'd just up your activity level from sedentary to lightly active and not worry about logging it.

I wouldn't rely solely on a pedometer - only to give you very very brief readings only for the sole purpose that it doesn't count each and every step you take. It needs a certain or above powered 'bump' for it to register as a step [which is why I disregarded mine]. I would tend to lean more along the lines of Google Earth only because it is designed using GIS [Global Information System] which is more accurate than 'bumps' and calculations on a pedom.

In saying this, I agree with the one above and stick to somewhere inbetween!

Also, gather a few data points and do an average. It's always an option :D

I'd skip that advice to increase activity level as MFP activity levels don't ramp up to high enough calorie levels to include exercise.

As to what is realistic, obviously the pace is needed, so an accurate distance is needed. But once you have that and time, use this.

For outside with slight up and downs, go for 3 % incline.

If you were flat, that would be more accurate than a HRM, with correct distance and time of course. And that's what MFP uses in it's database from many sources, but you must match the pace given walking flat.

Try this for distance, it uses Google map distances, and it always nails my bike rides of 40 miles and up, so it'll hit your 4-6 mile walk accurately enough.

The only difference here would be if you are on paths, and they are not where the mapping system has them, so you might switch to satellite view to confirm there is a path where the line is.

I would use the website www.mapmyrun.com. It allows you to put in a walking/jogging/running path, and it allows you to map your own path block by block, and will tell you exactly what the distance is. I think also, if you create a profile with weight and such that it can calculate calories for you, but not sure on that one.

Thank you all! I'll check it out.... But I did check the distance between my home. And the school by tracing the path on the map very accurately and then measuring it in miles.... And the calories are all over the place
