I have a polar ft7 so I would NOT get a fitbit. I believe its a similar device that tracks pretty much the same thing. I say save your money.
They are the same thing now? Ones a pedometer & the other is a heart rate monitor.
I have BOTH. I use my HRM when I run or workout. I use my fitbit 24/7. I do over 40,000 steps a day, walk over 40km a day because of my fitbit.
HRM & Fitbit are not the same thing at all. A HRM will not track sleep, flights of stairs or how many steps you do a day.
But then Fitbit is not a HRM either. It does not measure your heart rate, but it does workout how fast you are walking.
Edit: I should mention before I got my Fitbit One last November I would run my 10km a day & then do nothing all day. Not even walk anywhere. ..... now..... I walk everywhere. Like I mean everywhere. 23km to get mascara. 17km for a light globe. I walk 6km to the supermarket each day, just to got some yoghurt or something we need...I'll come back with a backpack & 2 bags full.
It's the best little tool...so good in fact I got one for son, one for hubby & then got one for a friend on here.0 -

6 if your stride is like mine. 10,000 steps for me is 10km (6 miles) .... everyones stride is different.0 -

I think the estimate is because most people aren't taking full strides all day. Going from the couch, around the counter to the fridge or from the toilet to the sink isn't going to be a full stride for most people.0 -

You can also change your step goal from 10,000 to any particular number you want. I have a friend that has his set at 7,000 because that's a challenge for him and it motivates him more than 10,000 that he'll never reach.0 -
10,000 steps is about 4 miles here... a bit more.0
