@rheddmobile Glad you have figured out how to "hold it." I haven't gotten there yet. My mom like to say I have to pee at every tree. LOL Good idea to check out the courses first. Glad there were no marriage altering arguments this time around. Stanky creek sounds intense. If I were you, I would at least pause my watch at the intersections. Great pictures.
@Avidkeo At least you found the silver lining to eating too much. You're doing great!

@rheddmobile you guys are warriors! Love your pics. And congratulations on your accomplishments in not peeing. Hiking has similarly done that for me. Especially now that it's cold. There's no way I'm going to take my pants down in the woods if I can at all help it.
@avidkeo great running! Hope your 13k feels just as good! And good luck with your February goals.

My car said it was 9 degrees out this morning. So I ran 9 miles to match.
It was a brutal one. I meant to meet up with the run club group but I spaced out while driving there and ended up at the wrong end of the park (where we meet for Saturday runs, so I was on autopilot). No worries, that actually gave me a little more time to get myself all bundled up before starting. I went in the direction that I would meet up with the group eventually. The wind off the lake was not horrible but enough to make any bare skin sting and I'm sure the real feel temp was close to 0. And there was a bit of sideways snow for much of the time. I was pretty adequately dressed and had a balaclava for my head/neck and two layers of mittens with hand warmers. Also toe warmers in my shoes but took those out at about 3 miles in because they were bothering my feet. It was a good trial to see how it went. I might be able to put them on top of my feet instead of under. I found the group about 20 minutes in, and ran with them for a bit but coach and some newer runners were mostly doing a short run. When we got to the other end of the park, they stopped and I did an extra loop section and when I got back to where they had stopped, coach said he'd go back out with me at least until he found the other members of the group who were still out there. So I had some company for a couple more miles. He's always a good source of entertainment so that part went by a little easier.
After he left, I still had a little over 4 miles to do and I was not feeling good about that. I stopped at my car and got some water and queued up a podcast and forced myself to go back out there and do it. My pace was not great. Mile 7 was the worst and I debated just calling it quits because I had to pass my car one more time. I stubbornly kept going though and finished out 9. I wanted 10 but that's where I lost the will to go on. So glad that's done because tomorrow is supposed to be colder and snowier.
One of our run group members had for the daily post on facebook written cold running-themed altered lyrics to the first verse of the Gloria Gaynor song "I Will Survive" this morning including: "Kept thinking I could not survive a chilly run outside. I spent so many minutes thinking how this run would be long. But I stood strong..." And I wrote this response to continue it after my run :
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Kept trying hard not to let this run completely break my heart.
And I spent oh-so many miles just feeling sorry for myself
I might have cried
But now I hold my head up high!
Cold:
Edited to add - and that exceeds the 100 mile goal for January, despite the low mileage days of the rest of this week.

Beast! Beast!

The moon was absolutely beautiful this morning. I headed out around 6:30 for a little over five miles. Temp was 19F but no wind and clear skies.4
-
Try finding a spot to pee in the desert 🤣
You can't "hide" behind anything.4 -
WOW @katharmonic ! You did great to hang in there for 9 miles, especially having past your car a couple of times! Love the song lyrics and picture too! Burr! So cold!
@Teresa502 You are a beast too. I almost didn't walk outside this afternoon when it was 35°F!
Hahaha @RunsOnEspresso ! Wondering if any of you ladies have tried a Female Urinary Device? I've thought about getting one, since I have to pee so much.1 -
I walked 2 miles on the driveway today. It was cold, but I felt like I needed the fresh air. Walked it in 34:53 minutes. Not too bad.7
-
Good job everyone! Still overwhelmed at work, and the home plumbing saga just keeps getting worse. Too long to get into. Just suffice to say, the universe has a terrible sense of humor 😒
Got out after work for 8 miles today.

@katharmonic, I can't comprehend that level of cold, let alone running in it. I've never run in snow or subzero temperatures. I am in awe. I moan when it's below 10˚C. I also moan when it gets above 25˚C - we temperate climate runners are such wusses!4

Lol im good down to about 4˚C and hate anything above about 16˚C bahaha. Definitely prefer cooler runs.
Though New Plymouth doesn't get anywhere near as humid at Auckland. That's like running through soup2 -
So guys, I did 13k this morning. Despite having a bit of a rough night on call last night - was up till about 230 am, slept till 8, so had 5hrs sleep at least.
Had breakfast of cornflakes and banana, went about 30 mins later, and that worked great. No tummy troubles at all! So will continue that as my long run.
My planned pace was 6:27 min/k. I ended up doing 6:21. So very happy with that. My hips were getting a bit tight the last couple of km, so made sure I stretched well after.
This week was a repeat week, next week I increase my long run to 14.5k.
HM is 3 weeks away tomorrow!9 -
Nearly the end of the day 30th January here, so I started Feb Challenge

Since I didn't run yesterday I ran today. It was still pretty cold, but not as cold as yesterday. I think I was dressed well for it. It is always hard for me to figure out what to wear when it is cold. It was nice run. I ended up with 5.64 miles. I would have liked to round up to 6, but I just didn't have time. So I just called it 5 miles plus 1K

No runs for the last two days. I was so tired after work that I decided I was going to lie down around 8:00 to watch some tv and hopefully fall asleep. Four hours later, I was still awake! Maybe a run would have helped. I have to go to work to do rounds this morning, but I am going to try to get a run, and a nap, in this afternoon.5

This morning was my last run of the month and it was a tough one. Yesterday was a bad day with family issues, I didn't get much sleep, my husband decided the moment I was putting on my shoes to go run was perfect to pick a fight. Dark, tired, tight legs and stressed, angry brain don't make for the best of runs. The first few miles were REALLY slow, then I eventually found my normal slow pace. Wasn't in the mood to face hills, still restricted on where we can go, so I ended up going up and down and up and down the same quarter mile or so of school car park. Stopped home to pee and refill water bottles at around 11k. I knew I needed 13k to reach 150km for the month, so I thought A LOT about quitting then, but then I wasn't in a convenient place to stop and then at 14k I needed a gel and then I'd had a gel so I couldn't quit and 'waste it'. Oh the crazy stuff our minds do on long runs. By 17k I was even sick of my music, so I stopped for a minute and searched for a podcast I read people talking about on Facebook. BEST DECISION EVER. Ended up laughing out loud a couple of times during the last 2k, getting me some funny looks from people. By the time I got home I was literally crying with laughter.
Looking back my goal for the month was 154km, stretch goal 100 miles. I've managed 156k and I am NOT going to let myself go out tomorrow and do another 5 because that would be asking for trouble. My legs are going to hurt anyway so that should put me off.

Sunny, no wind, and a balmy 11.9 degrees F this morning. Saw lots of fresh deer tracks; heard cardinals singing, and even heard a few grumpy robins.
@Avidkeo Thanks for getting us rolling in February!!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!

I have one but I've never tried it. I haven't wanted to use the space in my pack or experiment with it so far. But I got a bigger pack for winter and I may just give it a try at home today and see if I want to bring it with me on my hike tomorrow. I will report back (I know everyone is so excited to hear more pee talk).
Great job @Avidkeo on your run and thanks for setting up February.
@eleanorhawkins What podcast was this? I love laughing out loud while running. It keeps people on their toes about whether you might be crazy. Great job on your goal for the month. Take your rest day.

Depending which source I check, it was 5 degrees F this morning (or 12?), so a little colder than yesterday but probably not as cold with wind chill. Fewer degrees, fewer miles. I was relieved that some friends wanted to just meet and do a short run on the roads in the neighborhood rather than trails or hills. And I'm skipping class at the gym today so I'm feeling good being back in my warm house and done with major activity for the day.
That's going to do it for mileage for January. Tomorrow I'm hiking so I won't run. Getting ready with spikes and snowshoes and all the things to keep from freezing out there. It's supposed to be a calm and sunny day at least so hopefully it will be fun!

@Scott6255 Sorry your plumbing issues aren't resolved yet and that work is overwhelming. You are doing great, getting out to run despite all of that. Hope things calm down soon!
You are doing great @Avidkeo ! You are going to crush that HM! Thanks for setting up the Feb challenge!
@marisap2010 I haven't been able to get to sleep at a decent hour recently either. So, I feel your pain. Hope you get in a nap and a run this afternoon.
@eleanorhawkins Glad you were able to find something to make you laugh at the end of your run. You did great to hang in there. Sorry about family drama.
@Tramboman 11.9 degrees. You do this just to see who is actually reading it, don't you? You did great getting out in those temps.
Nice running @katharmonic ! I'm looking forward to seeing pictures from your hike and getting a review of the FUD. Have fun!

Yesterday I drove to a nearby forest for a run, and was intrigued to see trail run markers all over the place! So last night I looked it up, found the running club on Facebook, downloaded the route for the current virtual 7k race, and planned to drive and go do it today. Then I woke up... and realized that I hadn't done a HM distance run this month. My streak is 25 months and I'm not injured or otherwise physically unable to do it. So I left the car and ran 7+ km to the forest, followed the insane route, then 7 km back home.
By insane route, I mean there were some ok parts with packed snow on the main trails that were runnable, but then lots of side trails with slushy melting snow on top of leaves and mud, and steep hills up and down on repeat. It was slow going. I was so focused on not falling, that I didn't take pictures. I questioned multiple times what I was even doing there, but knew I'd be glad I did it. I'm guessing the others ran earlier in better conditions (they had all month, I think), and I debated even posting my time as it puts me in last place, but figured why not set some low expectations and get into the community a little bit.
Pictures from yesterday. Today there was more overnight snow, more melted snow, and then rain that turned into snow. Feet were wet but not hurting cold.
"Start line" today was on a runnable section. Maybe the rest was runnable for those with trail shoes or cleats, but not for me. I've gotta find the box with my other shoes.
50+ km for the week DONE, and HM streak preserved and extended to 26 months in a row with at least one HM-distance or longer run. Rest day tomorrow11 -
@rheddmobile I used to always try to tough it out, but now I will definitely swap run/rest days for better weather.
@katharmonic You are a beast! I feel kind of bad for wimping out at 28°. But to be fair, I don't think I have ever experienced temps under maybe 14°.
@Teresa502 I love those mornings when the moon is full and bright.
@Runsonesspresso And if you do see something to hide behind you probably don't want to get too close to it.
@quilteryoyo You are a beast too. I probably would have wimped out of walking at 35°. It's easier for me to run in the cold than to walk in it. Plus you did just have surgery.
@Scott6255 Sorry that work is still overwhelming and the plumbing issues are still ongoing. Great job on getting out for your run and exceeding your goal.
Thanks for setting us up @Avidkeo. I'll have to think about my goal.
Great run @polskagirl01! Way to preserve your streak! It sounds like you are settling into the new place.4
