Hilarious Gym Jerk

Okay, so, I had a funny thing happen at the gym yesterday morning.
I had just finished up my leg day and was in the stretching/ab workout area of my gym doing my routine stretches. There was a guy about 15 feet in front of me doing sit ups on the BOSU ball. He was going so hard to the point he continuously would make throwing up noises. He did a countless number of sit ups. Since he kept nearly throwing up and being over the top excessively loud about it a incredibly fit girl turns to him and says “hey man, are you okay maybe you should take a little breather.” He got up so fast and looked her dead in the eye and said “WE ARE NOT THE SAME” then he walked to the next person and said “WE ARE NOT THE SAME” then to me, and then to a few others. After that he starts to leave the gym without picking up his stuff or cleaning the mats all while chanting “WE ARE NOT THE SAME”
It was so comical lol. There was probably about 12 of us in the stretching/ab area and we all died of laughter after he walked out. I know it’s rude to laugh but I seriously could not hold it back. We were just so stunned lol.
Mind you, this guys chanting “WE ARE NOT THE SAME” was a very average looking guy. He wasn’t some alpha male fit dude. I’ve worked in the fitness setting as a trainer for roughly 5 years and have never seen something like this happen before lol.
Do you all have any funny/crazy gym stories?

Some people have angst about stepping in through the doors of a gym. You should know better than laugh at possible future clients. Maybe he was having a bad day.6
-
If that was his angst, he surely showed it by his comment.
Maybe this would wake him up to the fact that he was not the only one using the stretching area and in future to think of others - "WHO ARE NOT THE SAME”3 -
Worst thing about this story for me is the fella didn't clean up after himself, in the current climate. Our gyms aren't even open with this new variant kicking about.L1zardQueen wrote: »Some people have angst about stepping in through the doors of a gym. If we're getting theoretically offended on people's behalf, so could the people who he chanted at, that weren't involved. It would certainly put me off.

I’ve worked in the fitness industry for many years but laughing at someone working out is not cool. Who’s the jerk.7

Well, as I stated, I know it's rude to laugh but it was more of a laugh from shock. I am no longer a practicing CPT so the need for clients doesn't exist. Trust me when I say this was not angst on this guy's behalf. I've seen this guy since July of last year. Sometimes he's cool, sometimes he's in the zone. He was in the zone this time. The reason he is acting like this is because he's doing an incredible cut. I wouldn't be surprised if he's completely malnourished and that's his chant to keep pushing himself beyond the point that would break a typical person.
The vibe he gave off when Yelling "WE ARE NOT THE SAME" was easily associated with the "I am a lion mentality" lol.3 -

I absolutely agree with you. Thankfully one of the workers instantly went over there and wiped down his mat, bosu ball, and kettlebells. Sanitation is something no gym member should be slacking on.5 -

But they weren't laughing at his working out, they were laughing at the fact he went a bit crazy in response to being asked if he was ok? I imagine it was more of a WTF moment for most people present.14 -
We only have one side of the story. Whatever.5

EXACTLY! SPOT ON. Lol, thank you for putting that into words better than I can.4 -
To be honest I kinda feel sorry for the guy, sounds like he had some kind of breakdown.11
-
OP while you were having a good laugh at this person working out did you for a moment think perhaps he was working out for mental health reasons?
Who is really the hilarious gym jerk? IMO it's you who took the time to find humour in another human being at the gym and to post it here trying to have others agree with your sick sense of a joke!
Shame on you! I am guessing you are unaware of compassion!

I agree that the guy had a moment of mental unhingement. He may just have problems. Asking if he was OK was the correct thing to do. His shocker of a reply was not normal. Sometimes there is just a sequence of events, and things happen. I hope he didn't hear the laughing.8

Gotta reread - missed some points of the story. He had left.2 -
Our mileage will always vary. There's a Cowboy Code we live by in the wild, wild west and there's gym etiquette.
#1 Live each day with courage and #10 Know where to draw the line.
I would never laugh at anyone in the gym who's struggling to find their way back to fitness. Humor is good but taking care of yourself is serious business.6 -
I would have died trying NOT to laugh the whole time! There was one lady in my yoga class who would groan " Ohhh yeaahhh" everytime the position changed. And it was totally quiet during class so everyone heard it repeated for a whole hour! Next time I went to class, my friend and I found ourselves right behind her and it was even louder! OMG it was sooo embarrassing and hilarious at the same time!!4

takes all kinds lol
all i know is if someone yelled that at me, especially if I was checking on them to simply make sure they were okay .... Id very quickly reply with a ''THANK GOD!'
Makes me glad my gym is filled with old people who the only thing I can gripe about them is that they can be too chatty (its social hour for them. its not for me. WE ARE NOT THE SAME LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL )6 -
That doesn't sound like someone being a "jerk".
It sounds like someone who possibly has some mental health issues going on.10 -
So many of you aren't realizing this guy is your typical arrogant gym jerk lol. The laugh was from the shock of what just happened. This isn't my first time seeing this guy or even talking to him.8

I guess we're just not up for using a public forum to call out people at your gym that you don't like.9 -
I am sick to death of people claiming everything is related to mental health these days
Could it be that he was seeking attention and the laughing taught him a lesson - to be quieter in future7 -

Now you are trying to justify your obnoxious judgement of another person!
Why don't you re-read your original post and ask yourself who is the real "typical arrogant gym jerk"?

He wasn't there for that reaction. Except for the likely raised eyebrows and stares as he yelled at each person.1 -
Interesting that many will not comment on the guys reaction to an innocent question if he's alright, but are more than able to find fault in the reaction many had when he left.11

I think many people HAVE commented on the guy's reaction to an innocent question. His reaction was bizarre and displayed out-of-proportion outrage...that's why a few of us had questioned the individual's mental health.
None of us know the guy or what's up with him. I just think it's wrong to air your grievances about specific people on a public forum.5 -
Had I been there, and had he yelled that at me, I would have felt very uncomfortable and ill at ease. So when he left, I would have laughed because that's how I cope with stress or awkward behaviour. If others also laughed, I would have probably laughed harder. None of that laughing would have been at him.
I think the risk in the sharing of this anecdote is that many people are scared of going to a gym because they're afraid they will be made fun of, that people are secretly judging them... And this provides proof to that feeling. The fact that people noticed his workout and the sounds he was making and that they laughed about him in person and made fun of him online later.
It adds to the "we see you, we think you're odd, and we're laughing at you" mentality.
Now, before people get all disagree with me... I'm not judging the op or the gym goer. My own issues at the gym would have predisposed me to laugh, and to notice.
The long and the short of it is... At some point, when we take responsibility for our own life, we have to recognize that others may laugh at, mock, or disagree with what or how we're doing. And that is ok. It's our body, not theirs. Our goals, not theirs. Look inwards and focus on self, and it matters less who laughs.
If you want to crunch til you puke... Have at er. Why? Cuz we are not all the same!22 -

I don't read this as a grievance, I read it as a third party observation about an unusual day at the gym - maybe that's where the difference lies. There are loads of threads within the community section talking about weird behaviour in the gym.8 -

I'd likely be exactly the same!

I have all sorts of stories, from crazy exercisers doing the weirdest things, to people singing and dancing in the weight room and my favorite, catching a guy drinking liquor while doing bench press.
