I've never been thin, so I have no idea what my weight loss goal should be! I'm down almost 60 pounds. Trying to do hot girl crap for my 40th birthday in November. I'm Kara, 39, single mom. So happy to be here!

    Congrats on your weight loss so far: That's wonderful! Do you have specific goals or plans you're hoping MFP will help you with (other than that "hot by November" one 😉)?

    I'm a November birthday gal, too, but probably with a little different goal-set . . . next birthday, I'll be 66. 🙂

    I hear you on not having a clear idea of what "goal weight" looks like. The last time I was a "normal" weight for my height, I was a literal baby, so I have no frame of reference whatsoever for what my actual adult body ought to look like. There's lots of pics out there of people around my height with a normal BMI, but I can't conceive of myself with those dimensions.

    Oh, and, I forgot to mention: It's OK not to have a known goal weight. You can wait to decide until you get closer, when you'll have a better idea.

    Sometimes, when people see that MFP asks you to put a goal weight in your profile, they think that that goal weight will be used to estimate their calorie needs. It is *not*. If you say you're a certain size/age/activity level, and want to lose X pounds/kg per week, you'll get the same calorie goal whether the goal weight is 10 pounds away, or 100 pounds away.

    MFP just uses the weight goal for some motivational messages and such. You can reset it anytime you have a better idea, with no affect on calorie goal.

    (That said, it makes sense for good health to slow down your weight loss rate as you get closer to your real/final goal, but you do that by changing the "X pounds/kg per week" setting.

    My goal right now is honestly to just find a healthy diet that works for me. No fads, just working on finding a good balance. I don't want to cut any whole food group out of my diet. And I still want to drink beer and eat nachos sometimes lol.

    Good for you 60lb loss is awesome. I've never been thin either but I know I definitely felt better when I was lighter. I have lost 10lbs so far and I am hopeful.
