I've recently got the mirena iud and gained 10 pounds in a month, I've been eating healthy and exercising and have been the same weight for years. So I cracked down on my diet even harder and still gained 3 pounds in the second month of having it it. I must be water weight but it still looks bad and it's all around my mid section, if I gained before it was always in my hips. Has anyone had a lot of weight gain on it and then had the weight disappear after a few months? How long did it take for the your weight to come back down?

No one here can give you a medical diagnosis. Call your medical professional, today. There's only choices and consequences. The other consequences are a slow but steady gain over the next 9 months and then who knows. ;):D

Since Mirena is a hormonal IUD, weight gain is possible for two reasons:

    1. Water retention (you would gain a little and then stop)
    2. Increased appetite and so eating more (unless you do something about this weight gain can keep increasing)

Did you log your food scrupulously for at least a month before you got the IUD? People are normally terrible at estimating how much they eat. We may THINK we are eating the same when in fact we are not.

If you want to keep the Mirena, you will have to be extremely diligent about logging your food and not going over your calories. Do you use a food scale and weigh everything?

ParaGard is a copper IUD that does not contain hormones.

I have had hormonal BC that was AWFUL. it was the Jadelle, the rods in the arm. I had a raging appetite. I was hungry all the time. It was awful. I didn't gain anything but that's only because I was vigilant in keeping to maintenance calories.

I now have a mirena. I LOVE it. No cravings. I just feel normal.

People react differently to hormones. The Jadelle was awful for me, but works brilliant for some. The mirena is wonderful for me. I've lost 8lb since the new year.

That said, BC doesn't CAUSE weight gain. Perhaps a bit from fluid retention. It can cause increased appetite, which obviously causes weight gain. Sometimes it needs mind over matter, though that's so incredibly hard. If it is not right for you, and it sounds like it isn't, then you need to discuss other options with your Dr.

I can’t say I’ve ever had an issue with my Mirena, I’m now on my 3rd round. I’ve lost over 60lbs while I’ve had it. I will say it did take my body about 6 months to fully adjust to it, I had off and on unpredictable bleeding, and then the usual cramps and bloating. I also had mine put in right after I had my last baby, at 3 months post birth so my body was still recovering from child birth too, that was probably a factor.

Have you ruled out that the IUD has not moved, when you first get it, there is a small chance it can move abs migrate up into your Uterus, this also makes it not effective. I would make sure nothing like that has happened.

Everyone responds to certain BC differently, if you line like Mirena you may have to just give your body more time to adjust.

After I adjusted it absolutely love mine!! I very rarely get TOM anymore, and if I do it’s super mild. It was totally worth the adjustment period for me.

I never gained at all with it. I was post menopausal though and only had it in as the doctor said it would help stop the pre-cancerous cells I had. I hope she was right. I have it in for 6 years total until I'm 60. Cross fingers she is correct on it. Worries me a bit. I did bleed on and off for many months with it but then it stopped totally.

I am having the same thing with Liletta https://www.liletta.com/ I got on 12/11/20. I’ve gained 10pounds since then. And I maintained about the same for years before.

I need to talk to my OBGYN and figure this out.
