If I calculate 4 calories for every 1 gram of carbs and protein + 9 calories for every gram of fat consumed I get a different total calories consumed than what MFP shows. How does MFP calculate total calories consumed?

the database is user-sourced, that means most of the database entries are done by you and me. You need to find correct entries and then things will add up. More or less, as some countries handle fiber differently than others.2

Even with correct entries, there will be some rounding error. If the difference is relatively large, more likely poor database entries.
Also, you probably know this, and maybe it's not relevant to you anyway, but alcohol has calories, about 7 per gram, but those calories don't come from fats, carbs or protein. Sometimes people don't realize that (oddly, a lot of people seem to think alcohol is a carbohydrate!), and don't understand why their totals don't crossfoot.0
