Why are Americans so obsessive about each other's weight?

Is this in other cultures, too? Here, if you're healthy you're underweight or have "problems" that make you that way. If you're overweight, you're made fun of.

I think to some extent here in the US there is a segment of people that are just hung up on judging everyone that is not just like them. Be it politics, professions, religion, weight, whatever.
Though some of it can be hurtful when people are the target, I've learned long ago not to worry much about what other people think. It's when they get under your skin that you give them power. Without the power, they get no joy from it.1
