Reclaiming my identity

Hello everyone, I joined my fitness back 2016 but was unsuccessful, since this pandemic o decided I need help with taking control of my health. Married 27 years three grown children and 3 beautiful grandchildren 13,3 and 6 months. Know that everyone is grown with their own families I'm learning who I am as a 56 year old African American women. I'm looking forward to this journey and I'm excited about taking it with my fitness family. It been challenging because my husband is a very picky eater whose not to fond of change let a long veggies. In my journey I have learned I love all kinds of veggies and I'm realizing I don't really care about cooking but I do enjoy the creativity that comes with this journey. However I do have a great support system with my children . I love makeup, food traveling, fashion and reading my bible everyday. I "hate" excersies but I know now that it's a necessity I'm trying to find creative ways of moving. I realized this is a life long journey of change that will benefit me and my family. Being a caregiver for my ailing mother and a husband how challenges with change I'm relying on my fitness family for support and will be a supporter. Thank you fitness family.

Hi, Kim. I started at 56, too, and have lost nearly half of me.

As I progressed I changed my cooking style, adding more veggies, less starches, and my husband was not thrilled at first.

However, necessity being the, errrrr, mother of necessity, he had to come along for the ride if he wanted to eat, and has gradually changed to eat whatever is on the table, without complaint, and often enjoying it. (Black rice last night, left in the pantry by our visiting vegan daughter before lockdown, was a big success.)

I just make sure to have XL portions for him, but have noticed he often eats smaller portions now, voluntarily.

Exercise is something you’ll have to find your own path to, but when I started walking, I walked with neighbors and friends, which made the walk fly by. Precovid, we had a small neighborhood walking group and there was usually three or four, and we basically broke up in to fast and slow walkers.

There’s also small changes you can make to your daily routine that will add steps:

Don’t feel like age hampers your ability to lose weight. Fortunately, I have learned that’s a complete myth. It’s relaxing and doing less as we age that contributes to weight gain. I feel younger now than I did in my forties, and I certainly do a lot more.

There are many, many people in our age group here on MFP who have lost successfully.

    Hugs and much success!
