Goal: Lower body fat into a more healthier range or in Layman's terms...rid self of current grampa-bod and lower health risk.
My goal of past 4-5 years have been of strength and not Aesthetics. Though with this specific goal I knew by my waist circumference(35-37") I was on the cusp of higher risk to my health. After experiencing Covid19 in Nov/20 and my recent health issues due to autoimmune disease and age, I've chosen to add the goal of lowering body fat percentage by utilizing a slight caloric deficit(250 cals per day).
Current evidence suggests that a waist circumstance of > 40" for men and 34.5" for women are associated with significantly higher risks of obesity-related diseases
WC of > 37" for men and 31" for women are associated with higher risks of obesity-related diseases
For certain ethnicities, e.g. Asian, these numbers are different.

granpa-bod!?:D Studies (by insurance companies) have shown that people who are just a bit overweight live longer! I prefer to stay in the top of my healthy BMI range or even just a bit over.1

Yes, body fat my percentage has gone up quite a bit since my 40s for the reasons I stated. I have a grandpa-bod compared to my body of the last decade.
You might find reading the links I posted useful. They are considered current evidence and they go into great detail and length to show BMI is only a screening tool and not a end all for body fat percentage or health. One analysis used a combination of 11 studies with over 650,000 adults of ages 20-83 for a fourteen year period.
You can prefer to live at any weight you choose, but the established evidence linked shows what health care professionals are to recommend to their patients in most cases.Conclusions
In white adults, higher waist circumference was positively associated with higher mortality at all levels of BMI from 20–50 kg/m2. Waist circumference should be assessed in combination with BMI, even for those in the normal BMI range, as part of risk assessment for obesity-related premature mortality.Waist circumference strongly correlates with abdominal obesity and is the most commonly used clinical measure of body fat distribution.
Keep in mind WC is helpful to determine health risk for people that aren't underweight.1 -

Yes, I'm going to read that research. I agree that waist circumference is probably a better way to determine health risk because of the diversity of body shapes. I remember reading a while back that we should keep our waist size at half our height or less. So I start worrying if mine goes over 31.5 inches. That's why I started MFP last year, but even at 10 pounds over suggested BMI my waist was still about 30 inches so I don't worry much about weight. I'd try to lose more if it were closer to 31 inches. I carry some muscle mass so pictures can be deceiving. Again I'm not trying to improve my Aesthetics specifically, only goaling a smaller waist line and lower risk.
I might add I've survived late stage cancer, progressive autoimmune disease, and kidney failure at or very near my current waist circumference.2 -
Understood! That's my main concern is to do what I can to live as long as possible. There's so much in the environment, our genes, etc. that we can't do much about, but at least we can keep up to date with the science and do what we can. The aesthetics are a nice bonus, haha1
