Hi, I've been trying to lose weight over years. It has not worked, give or take a couple of pounds lost. I really want to try to lose weight naturally or I'm thinking of having the surgery (which I really don't want).. I have hypothyroidism so that is another concern. I am 330 and would like to lose a least 80 to 100 pounds. I can't blame my thyroids all because I never stay consistent and exercise. I always find myself going back to old habits in a matter of weeks. Help.. Any suggestions...

Losing weight is hard as hell, and it takes time. Crash diets are glamourous but not sustainable, and eventually your body will not drop further because of hormones and the strive for equilibrium. Don't be so hard on yourself, its a journey that will happen over time. You may want to check out a TDEE calculator to find what your calorie intake should be. Under eat the maintenance number by 10-15% that it provides. The progress will be slow, I can assure you it will work and keep you motived to continue the process.
Good luck!

Habits take time to change. Gradual slow changes are best.
Don't eliminate all the foods you like. Don't choose an aggressive weight loss rate/low calorie goal. Don't go from 0 to 100 exercising till you burn-out, especially if it's a kind of exercise you don't enjoy. Don't make temporary changes to lose weight.
Do find small things you can change, to reduce your calorie intake or increase your activity level, changes you can imagine keeping up long-term. Do be patient and forgiving with yourself.3 -
Calorie counting supported by a food diary works. It really does. But there is a significant learning curve that drives a lot of people nuts. Also losing a significant amount can take a long time. That’s another thing people have a hard time with.
Start a food diary and get a food scale to crunch the numbers. Use the MFP calculators to find the calorie target to maintain your current weight and try to make a menu to aim at that. Be sure to log everything with calories into your diary no matter what. Over your number? Log it. Wildly over? Log that too. The process is more important than the numbers. Always keep your diary. When you have a feel for the process, go back to the MFP calculators and find the number to lose 1 lb per week. That’s right 1 lb. Try to hit that. You can always adjust the deficit later as you get used to your plan.
Weight loss has 2 parts, eating in a calorie deficit and living with it. People tend to go all in on the calorie deficit and try to beat themselves into living with it. Generally doesn’t work. A plan you can’t live with is not a good plan. The good news is plans can be adjusted and fixed. You know that thing about experience being the best teacher? In weight loss it the only teacher. Nearly everything is a matter of trial an error. It can be frustrating but keep working and you will get there.
Weight loss is mostly about problem solving and persistence. When you make mistakes, and you will, just keep the record in your food diary and keep working. No throwing up your hands and walking away. Identify your problem areas one at a time and try to find solutions. Some things can’t really be solved but you can find ways to keep them under control. You don’t have to win every battle. Sometimes the best you can do is fight to a draw. But the good news is calorie counting doesn’t have to be perfect to work.
When the voice in your head starts telling you that you can’t do it or that it takes too long, tell the voice to shut put and keep going. You don’t have to get to goal weight for your life to start getting better. Try it and you will see. You can have the life you want. Really. Good luck.2
