Greets ...
Hope all are safe and sane during these times ...
I am trying to learn this app.
For the most part, I am doing OK.
I like to put the foods that I use most into My Foods.
However, I like to change the naming convention of most database names, so the foods are grouped by name in the list. For example, Milk Whole, Milk Skim, etc. I don't like Whole Milk, Organic Milk, or Generic Milk, or whatever, as they are scattered in the list if you do A-Z sort.
So, I can create new foods for My Foods, but I don't want to have to fill in all the nutritional values manually.
I'd like to copy or save a food from the main database and put it in My Foods and edit the name.
I could create a meal, this really doesn't meet my need.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks for listening ...
Bob

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the only way to get a food into your My Foods list is to create it or edit an existing one. You can edit the name of an existing food database entry, but I've never tried only editing the name and none of the nutritional values, so I don't know if the system would reject it when you tried to save it if the only thing you changed was the name.

I have not figured out how to take an existing main food database entry and edit it and put it in MyFoods. I have tried poking at all the buttons, but nothing is working. It seems like creating one from scratch is the only way. I wonder if someone from MyFitnessPal could confirm one way or the other. If there is some sort of workaround ... Thanks0

I don't know about the app, but on the web version you can easily edit existing food items by clicking the "Nutrition Info" green button, then choose, "No," and then just change the name if that's all you want to change, then "save." I do this all the time, for the same reason you stated. It then goes into My Foods listed the way I want it.1 -

Just adding one point -- you have to start this process from your food diary, clicking on add food, searching for a food in the database, then clicking the nutrition info button. If you start from searching the main food database, you don't get the option to say whether the entry is accurate ("no") and edit it. From the way OP described their unsuccessful efforts ("I have not figured out how to take an existing main food database entry and edit it and put it in MyFoods"), it makes me think that the problem is not starting from the food diary.1 -
OK Thanks.
But, I am having trouble figuring out what you are saying/doing.
What are your steps?
Search for a food on the main database?
So, I look for Milk and it gives me a scroll list of matches.
Is this where you are going?
Then I select the one I want and the nutrition info shows up on the right side of the screen. Right?
It's at this point that I get lost.
Where is the nutritional info 'green' button?
I guess I need to establish that I am in the right screen.
Thanks for getting back with me ...

^^ Oh, well that's weird.
Here's what I get from a search:
On screen one at the bottom is the green Nutrition Info button, and then if that fails, the "Add a food to the database" thing....
If I click the green "Nutrition Info" button on the first screen I get the second screen pop-up, and can then click, "No," and do an edit there.
Looks like you cut that part off when you did the screen capture. Isn't it there? - to the right of your image? See my second screen cap:

OK, I guess I need to ask.
Are you using the free or paid version app?
I do not see the extra stuff you show.0 -
You don't need premium for this.
I think it was already mentioned above:
Do NOT go directly to the food database.
Do go to the food diary, click on 'add food', enter the name of what you're looking for in the search field, click on search and then you'll see the different results of your search with the green buttons for each result you click on.1 -
Nevermind question about free or not, we are talking web app.
So, I do get the info you are talking about.
I was in the wrong area.
However, I do not get an option to change and save.
It just says thank you and moves on.
Look at the attached two screens ...

I found this somewhere else ...
Note: Verified (check-marked foods) cannot be edited by users.
So, I am able to edit and save ...
Thanks for your help ...
