MyPlate Protein

So I have to wonder with the plans, the education the app shares, and tries to teach. When you look at Protein, your gender and age group, do you see a shocking low number? I get 6 oz a day. So 2 eggs for breakfast, 1 oz at lunch and 3 oz of Salmon at dinner. Does this seem accurate?

    Maybe. Maybe not.

Why don't you just plug your stats into MyFitnessPal's Goals page and go from there.

You give us no information about you, six ounces might be fine.

Don't forget to count the protein you'd get from the other 4 food groups.

The focus of My Plate is a balanced, nutritious diet and a lot of people would be doing themselves a huge favor if they ate even remotely close to what is recommended by My Plate. I put my info into that calculator and it looks pretty good to me. 2800 calories to maintain (which jives pretty close to my own data), 7 ounces from protein food group, 2.5 cups from the fruit group, 3.5 cups from the veg group, and 10 oz of whole grains.

You also have to consider that you're going to get some protein from other food groups as well, particularly whole grains (I get 6 grams of protein in my breakfast serving of Coach's Oats for example). I am also of the opinion that, while I think a bit more protein while dieting and more protein if active (particularly if engaged in frequent strenuous activity) can be beneficial, I am also of the opinion that at the moment, protein is all the rage and some of the numbers that get thrown out there are ridiculously overkill. A lot of those numbers come from the bodybuilding community and most of us aren't body builders and in reality just end up making expensive glucose. Even among the bodybuilders I know personally, most of them think a lot of the current recommendations are getting ridiculous and not really applicable to someone who is overweight with much of that weight being fat.

I would say that I generally get more than what My Plate is telling me for protein, but not really excessively so. A four ounce piece of meat or chicken or fish for a meal a couple of times per day is pretty normal for me, and maybe a couple of eggs depending on the day. I'd say I probably average 8-10 oz from the protein food group vs the 7 recommended when I put my info into My Plate. I also typically have one vegetarian meal per day. I also put things like beans and lentils more into the grains group (I know they aren't a grain) than I do the protein group as they are predominately carbohydrates and contain a lot of fiber along with some protein.

My Plate is meant as general guidance for a large population for a healthy, balanced diet.
