whenever i log my food, sometimes (a lot) i get this small orange print under the entry that says 'your sugar goal is to stay under ....' I've mainly been focusing on calorie count only, but is this suggestion significant for my weight loss goal??

No it's not relevant for weight loss, don't worry about it 🙂
It's a general recommandation for health. And even then, it's not really accurate, since it doesn't take into consideration the difference between natural and added sugars (added sugars are the ones we should try and limit for health reasons).6 -
If I were getting sugar from foods like ice cream and baked goods, I might pay attention to that as eating a lot of them makes it difficult for me to stay in a calorie deficit, as I do not find them filling and sometimes they are triggering.
Currently my sugars are coming mostly from fruit and dairy. I use MFP on desktop so don't get that notice. I swapped out sugar and sodium for fiber (hitting my fiber goal helps me stay full for less calories) and saturated fat (I'm tracking this for a medical condition.)2
