People simply do not realize truly how dangerous it is to not eat back some of those exercise calories if you are eating at a large or even moderate deficit (depending on how much you are exercising). You can look fine and feel fine and seem fine for a long time until one day, usually very suddenly... you are NOT. and once you reach that point, the recovery is often long and very hard, because far too much damage has been done by that point.
