So, I am trying something new. I cut out alcohol, eating 1200 calories and day with 1500 on weekends. Working out five days per week. So far five pounds down since Aug 1.
Been trying to lose since Jan and just went up and down. This is working

I'm glad it's working. If you are consuming a low level of calories and exercising it is important that all your calories are from good, healthy food and not taken up by alcohol.1

Great to hear. I haven't had a drink since May and I was consuming 500-1000 calories per day (sometimes more). I didn't get hangovers, but it did effect my sleep and my motivation and ability to stick to my workout schedule (I workout in the mornings every day). I was replacing food calories with alcohol, which isn't healthy; it wasn't always on purpose, but often because I was drinking and just wasn't hungry. Since May I've kept on a strict 1500cal or less diet (considered unsustainable by some, but it's not for me), 1g/protein per body weight (considered over necessary by most), and have never missed a workout. I dropped from ~175lbs to ~155lbs and my lifting has not stalled (on a progressive-overload program). Dropping the alcohol helped drastically, not only in my health, but quality of life in general. I find myself to be more motivated, more considerate/thoughtful, and less negative.
I'm not opposed to alcohol; I'm still around it on a daily basis and when going out to eat I almost always sit at the bar as I find the atmosphere more inviting and the service more enjoyable. It's also fun to meet new people and people watch conversations and reflect on my drinking behaviors. Some may find this a trigger - for me it's helpful not to try to shy away from it. I don't plan to add alcohol back anytime soon for personal reasons.
Congratulations on trying something new and it's great it's working for you. It's not for everyone; it definitely has helped me and good to hear a similar story10 -
