Feeling sad and eating chocolate

I'm feeling sad for no reason and I've gone to bed early with half a block of chocolate. How do I break this habit of emotional eating.

  • I am glad you recognize what you are doing. I binge (wish I could say used to) when I am bored or depressed. I really don't know the actual trigger. I have to stay on a strict routine so I don't get into the binge mode. I lost, maintained and now gained back about 10 lbs and am not happy. I am back on track and this is day 5. I feel so much better.

I know this did not help much but at least you know I am thinking about you.
  • Im an emotional binge eater too, the awful thing is although at the time it feels good, when the empty packets are strewn around, the pain and suffering of guilt are worse than the initial problem.
There are a couple of things that help, sometimes. Rather than eat, do something like go for a walk, pop to the shops (not food shops) for an hour, do the ironing/other chore, anything to distract from feeling bad and wanting to eat, and riding out that urge. Chew a piece of gum, make a hot chocolate (low cal),
Important thing is, look at how much weight you have lost, 17kg....wow. That is amazing. That is something to feel good about, and reason enough not to beat yourself up over a bar of chocolate. That bar does not mean the whole thing is ruined, you have not failed. Maybe you needed it. Just have to get back on it tomorrow and put it behind you, and work on what you are going to do next time you feel this way.

    Tomorrow is another day!!!

Thanks for your replies. I'm feeling much better and in control this morning. Back on track. Maybe next time I'll try to exercise instead of eat.
