Older guy starting a new journey

I'm in my mid-60s, and starting on the journey to get serious about health and fitness. I'm not trying to be the next Olympic champion - I just want to live a good life in the years I have left. I'd like to drop my weight from 240 to 180, and not get out of breath bending over to tie my shoes. I want to be able to do stuff around the house & yard and play with the grandkids without having to cuddle the heating pad the rest of the night. My wife has some health issues, and I need to stay in a condition that will let me support her.

Right now, I'm trying to do an intermittent fasting - basically not eating until lunch time. On work days (my alarm goes off at 4am and I get back home about 6pm), I put 10 minutes on the elliptical. On weekends, I try to ride my recumbent trike at least once, hopefully twice: so far, I'm averaging about 6 miles at about 8 mph. No arms or upper body just yet - I have some shoulder issues and seeing a physical therapist for help with that.

    Hi, @Trike_Rider Welcome to MFP.

I started here three years ago. My husband is mid-60’s and similar weight and goal to you. He started here three months ago.

I’ve been “coaching” (as opposed to nagging, lol) him through this. You might find our story helpful:

There’s also several threads here for members over 60, scattered here and there.

Please feel free to holler if you need anything. I root for the old “grey headed possums”. 😉

Thanks for the boost! Here's hoping that both BL and I survive the holidays!! :8>)

Personally, I am not into logging all my eats. It's too complicated with some of the things my wife puts together for dinner, we go out to eat quite a bit, .... and it would be too depressing looking at all the snacks I throw down!! Right now I'm looking more for a community forum where I can get answers to the hundreds of questions I have. I hope to get some new FitBits for my wife and I - she has one, but it's outdated, and my Samsung watch doesn't want to give up health and exercise data.

Costco has some killer deals on Apple Watch SE, Fitbit, garmin right now.

My daughter got a Fitbit Luxe for half what we’d seen it elsewhere before she headed back to Europe last week. And it was even more expensive there, so it was a no brainer.

She really wanted an Apple Watch after seeing ours sync to MFP but had just gotten a brand new Android, and they only coordinate with iPhones. She’s been pleased with the Fitbit so far, just a little confused on how it’s reporting calories. But it’s only been a week.
