Newbie

Hi, I’m new here. Not only do I need to lose some weight but according to my doctor I need to reduce my carbs & sugar and increase my protein. Exercise is out for a while as I’m getting a knee replacement in a few weeks. ☹️

Welcome! I'm also new here and also getting surgery in a few weeks. I hope everything goes smoothly for you and you're able to continue your health journey after surgery. That's my goal for myself :)

Hello & welcome! This is just my curiosity, but is your doc telling you to reduce carbs/sugar due to pre-diabetes or...? Regardless, on the bright side, many people (but not everyone) find that increasing their protein intake helps a lot with satiety, so cutting some calories overall may not be as painful as it otherwise would be. Good luck with the knee replacement!
  • @hotwire77 First, I LOVE your name! This app makes it super easy to scan and track, and that means that you can so much easier understand what is happening with sugars and carbs. There are a number of forums for the reduced carb/sugar crowd and recipes. Because eating foods you like will be really important for changing the way you eat! My hubby has diabetes, so I end up eating as if I have diabetes. Low carb tortillas, keto cakes, seed bread and I assure you it is all yummy!! Friend me.

A thread here that I found super helpful for increasing protein, while keeping calories reasonable, is this one:

    http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10247171/carbs-and-fats-are-cheap-heres-a-guide-to-getting-your-proteins-worth-fiber-also

It links to a spreadsheet that lists many, many foods in order by protein efficiency, most protein for fewest calories. Maybe that could be helpful for you, too, to find foods you enjoy that have more protein?

Wishing you success with your nutritional goals, and your surgery!

P.S. There are some surprisingly vigorous seated-exercise videos over on YouTube, targeted at people like wheelchair athletes. Might something like that help you stay active?
