Hi, Krishna. Welcome to MFP.
Are you on any medical restrictions for diet and:or exercise? Do you qualify for advice from a Registered Dietician through your health insurance?
Go the goals page and enter your height, weight, activity level, goal weight, and pounds per week you’d like to lose. If you only need to lose 50-70, I’d set it for a pound a week. That’s slow, but slow gives your more food, more room to breath, and people who go slow tend to continue to lose successfully, rather than those who jackrabbit into cutting and exercise and then plunge into a binge.
MFP will assign you a calorie goal based on your entries.
Then I’m going suggest something different.
Enter what you ate yesterday. The day before that and even the day before that. Not only will it give you practice using the diary, but it will be an eye opener to what you’ve been consuming.
I was shocked to realize I’d been eating 10-12,000 calories per day, which is six or seven times what MFP recommended me. No wonder I was obese. It shouldn’t have been a surprise, yet it was. That was very sobering for me.
Then start with small changes and add on.
Can you substitute diet soft drinks, water, or sparkling water for full calorie soft drinks?
Can you substitute skim or almond milk for cream in your coffee? Or switch to a zero calorie hot tea?
Can you walk or bike to work? Use stairs instead of elevator?
Preplan your meals so you shop with a list and are less likely to make impulse buys. If you look at my own diary, you’ll see I usually have it completed several days ahead.
Start thinking mindfully. Before you put something in your mouth? Ask yourself, is this worth it? What could I eat differently that might be more satisfying? We had Mexican last night. Those four servings of chips and salsa eliminated any possibility of a dessert later, but they were worth it and as it turned out I was perfectly happy with a chai latte instead.
I adore chai lattes. I sat down and worked out how to make a large chai latte for under 40 calories so I can continue to enjoy them several times a day. Apply that creativity to everything you do.
Best of success to you.0
