Pain on days I DON'T exercise?

I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this.
I get this muscle pain, mostly in my quads but sometimes in the buttocks and calves (ie, all the muscles that work hard when running) but it only happens on rest days or days when I haven't worked out for 36-48 hours. It is not DOMS, I've experienced that enough times to know the difference. It is a hot, achey sort of discomfort spread evenly throughout the whole muscle and it's there all the time, not just when I move or bear weight. It lasts for hours at a time; stretching and heat packs offer temporary relief. It's not very painful, but it is uncomfortable enough that I can't ignore it. It usually comes on in the evening and can stop me getting to sleep, but it's always gone next morning.
It feels as though my muscles are sore from lazing around, but I have years of practice doing that so shouldn't have any problems.
Any thoughts?

I know if I don't work out for 2+ days i get an all over ache (especially hips and knees), I assume it's where my body has got used to the excercise and the endorphins that come with it. If your worried perhaps have a chat with your doc to see if they can find a cause.0

Thanks for your reply. It is a sort of all over ache. I'm not especially worried - if anything it's motivation to keep up with the exercise. I'm just curious if anyone knows what it could be.
Someone mentioned potassium deficiency, but it's not an outright cramp and I do eat tomatoes, potato, white beans etc0
