New to this

Hello! I'm Paige, 31, female. I've been trying to get healthier for a few months, but I realized that without some sort of accountability I just wasn't going to do it. So, I joined this, started tracking calories, and workouts. I was surprised to realize that either I don't eat enough in a day, or I eat way too much unhealthy food in a day. I'm trying to lose the twenty pounds I gained while finishing my degree and working these last couple years, and just generally get into shape.

I have two siblings (both brothers), all three of us are very close in age and they both keep complaining about how your body falls apart when you turn 30. They are developing the excess weight, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, etc. problems that our father's family has, and just act like there is nothing they can do about it. I'm deciding to do everything I can to avoid those problems now, instead of trying to reverse them later.

So, I'm planning to do the Couch to 5k program (on the treadmill), alternate with weight lifting/full body workouts, count my calories, and maybe make some like minded friends.

I'm sad for your brothers: Their own low expectations of themselves are trapping them in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You're making a different choice, and that can pay off. I'm fitter at 66, by far, than I was at 46. I'd be in even a better spot if I'd gotten serious at your current age. One of my close female friends is now 75, started lifting weights at 39 (in an era when women generally didn't do that!), is part of the group that rows 4 days a week on water in season with me, carries her rowing single by herself down to the water, still weight trains routinely. To look at her, you'd think she was a couple of decades younger. Another guy in my rowing club is over 80, rowing and cycling nearly every day. Those people's quality of life is much, much better than people who gave up before age 30.
    .
Healthy weight, and being active: Those can be great blessings. One has to earn them, but it's less work than many people think, not to mention much more enjoyable.

    Wishing you great success!

You don't have to fall apart just because you pass your 30th bday! I also started running using couch 2 5k. I found it to be a very good program. I enjoy running now! As far as eating and calories, just try to be more consistent. Show your brothers you can do it...and they can too!
