Hi, Jim, and welcome to the MFP Community!

I'm 66 now, joined MFP at age 59 to lose from class 1 obese to a healthy weight, and have been hanging around here for 6+ years since to stay at a healthy weight.

It sounds like you have some health conditions to manage along the way, but IME just getting the eating side of things in a better place can make a great contribution to quality of life, through fine-tuned nutrition, and - if needed - weight loss. It certainly helped me.

    Wishing you much success!

@westparktallaght, I've been on and off and on premium MFP. Unless you're someone who's more likely to stick with things when paying for them, I personally would suggest starting out with free MFP to learn the basics, unless you already know you need some of the features of premium. There are some good things there, but IMO many of them are either aimed at specialized situations (like the net carb calculation) or things that most people don't get into right at first (like varying calories/macronutrients by day of week in some pattern). Those are just examples, not a total list of useful features, though!

Free MFP and premium MFP use the same food/exercise databases for logging, and the same basic usage process. Premium offers more control over how things display, over some of the underlying ways things are calculated, and that sort of thing. I believe it may offer some additional Workout Routines and Plans, in the phone/tablet MFP apps only (not the web version). For some people with slower internet connections, just the lack of ads (which means pages may load faster) can be worth it.

Some of the MFP marketing materials will give you a more complete list of features.

If you already have premium, that's a different question. Most of the initial usage questions people have, the answers would be the same for free or premium MFP. It'd still be good, though, if you were to post questions, to say that you have premium, in case it does happen to be about one of the things that differs.

    Welcome to both of you!

My husband is 66 with diabetes and high blood pressure. He’s dropped 25+ since he started in August and we can’t wait (now there’s a change!) for his next doctors visit to see how his numbers have changed and if he can potentially reduce or eliminate any meds.

It’s been like watching a blossom unfold. He so much more active this month than last, last month than the previous one and so on. I swear he’s Benjamin Buttoning before my eyes and I LOVE it!!!!

I’m almost 60. I was lose my diagnosed with arthritis about ten years ago, but imho, my joint pain stems to several bouts of illness as an adult. Losing weight and increasing activity has increased my quality of life a thousandfold, and reduced my joint pain significantly.

I did the free version of MFP for about two and half years, during the bulk (ha!) of my weight loss. I joined for premium a year ago, because I want to make sure the developers have an income and can keep the app fresh and running for many years to come. I don’t ever foresee a time I won’t be weighing and logging, and that’s ok by me. At the first few months it really becomes second nature.

    Much success to you both!
