Any other real ale drinkers?

I love ale and hate lager.
While growing up, I didn't think I liked beer. Most of what was served were various inexpensive lagers.
Occasionally, I would have a beer that I loved, but I never paid attention to it because it was such a rare occurrence.
I didn't realize the common denominator was "ale" until I was 40.0 -
I'm an American drinker of real beers -mostly ales, but no IPA- cream ale, Scotch ale, porter, stout, Belgian, hefeweizen, black lager, oktoberfest... I don't want to start a controversy, but I think hops are a travesty.
I'm English, but live in the States. I missed my English bitter so much I had to start making it. I have an English IPA cask conditioning now for a festival in a few weeks, but normally I force carbonate for personal consumption. So shoot me CAMRA. I can't drink 5 gallons fast enough on my own to keep it fresh if I don't.
I also have a Pliny the Elder clone going that'll be ready to drink soon. American IIPA = LOTS of hops. Yum.
Course, I also love doing "research" on different beers and different styles.0 -

Years ago i made home brew lager, and it really was lush, the highly advertised stuff is just not in same league and I guess the popularity of it amongst the young is down to advertising & not taste0 -
I love a good Sam Adams or especially Bass Ale.0

The one Ale I like here in the US is White Wolf Ale. Wonderful stuff.0

All around beer lover here. I enjoy ales, lagers, wheat beers, well... basically all of it. I tried to make a list of my favorite styles and ended up just listing all of them. The only kind of beer I don't drink is light beer - I figure that if I wanted a glass of soda, I could get a sprite and put vodka into it in that case.
In addition to drinking craft beers, I brew my own. I'm actually enjoying a nice homebrew bock as I write this :drinker:0 -

Not had that one, but I do think time & place have an influence on perception, your pint by Thames as an example, for instance in a grim, dank boozer, on a wet Wednesday, near an industrial estate, close to Slough, would it still rate high?
Possibly, but I know sitting in sunshine, looking over Portsmouth harbour my HSB is more rewarding than same in grotty local boozer, even if grotty local boozer's is £1.45 cheaper0 -
Hi Becks, CAMRA member from UK here. Feel free to add me.0

Hi,
My name is Katie and I am an ale lover. CAMRA was a big part of my life in Leeds but moved to Glasgow at the beginning of the year and finding it hard to fit in to the new branch. Love a good beer. I must admit at the moment I don't log it. But as soon as things stop working I will start logging it!
Also in the world of academia.
Anyone feel free to add me!0 -
lol @ thinking craft beer only appeals to UK

Good link! I said 'real ale' so UK readers would understand, and 'craft beer' so US readers would understand. It's the closest cross-cultural translation!
Wow, I'm glad there are so many of you - I wondered if the dieting had meant a suppression of ale appetites! I'm in Sheffield, near so many local breweries - Wentworth, Sheffield Brewery, Thornbridge, Abbeydale, etc. I've been in Brighton all weekend for a conference and I've been drinking TEA (Hog'sback Brewer - chosen for its joke potential - 'oh, I've only been drinking tea') and Otter Beer! Also the inevitable London Pride. Got back and had a pint of Ilkey Pale Ale on my way home. Needless to say the day's log didn't look too good.
I'm intrigued that so many of you brew as well - peanut butter beer sounds awesome.0 -
My friend is in the Barnsley CAMRA branch, he asked lots of breweries for calories in their beer and worked out from their responses the calorific value by abv and made a graph. It's in one of the copies of their magazine on line, and I used it to add real ale at different abvs into my foods. http://www.barnsleycamra.org.uk/thebar/2012/autumn-2012.pdf page 15
This is brill - I've saved the chart for reference!

Tried opening the link and it says unavailable. I wish all real ales stated their calories etc on bottles and pump clips. This may help the industry as a whole as more people will realise they can still enjoy a pint when dieting/maintaining weight. I too am a CAMRA member so I think I may bring this up at a meeting0 -
theres a good group on here.0
