Last week I ran 5.3miles average pace 12 minutes 30 seconds. Today I ran 7.3 miles average pace 9 minutes and 50 seconds. My fitbit says I only ran 1500 more steps today than I did when I ran 5 miles. Have I taken longer strides= less steps or has something gone wrong?

It's possible you took bigger strides, which can make your pace faster. On my run today, my stride length varied from 1.00 to 1.07. It's also possible you did less movement after your run because you were tired. A lot of people flop on the couch after a hard run and don't move much.1

Hmmm....does your phone also count your steps? Could you compare the two?
I just looked quickly to see if I could find a couple runs that were at difference paces and see if my stride rate changed much and even with a minute between my mile times, my stride rates were 163 vs. 168 per minute different. So...5 additional steps per minute (about an hour run) different.
Do you have a way to check your stride rate like that? It'd help you figure out more what's going on or if there's an issue with your step-counter. But also keep in mind that it's just an estimate of how many steps you took.
I'll have to take note of how many steps I get on my runs.0
