Too much pasta / rice?

Options
Hey everyone!

I've hit my second plateau. First it was 8 stone for 2 weeks, now I've been on 7 stone for over a week, too. Moving out of the first plateau required me to change my drinks from normal to zero brands.

Anyway! I just have a small theory which I'd like an opinion on:

For the past 2 weeks or so most of my main meals have either had rice included, or pasta. ( I adore them, could eat both plain lightly salted )

Despite people saying only calories in vs calories out matter...does anyone think this may be the reason? All those carbs, even though I'm rarely over 1200?

I have my cals set to 1500, but still try for the 1200. If I AM going over my carb macros for 1200, I wouldnt know as its set to 1500. ( Which is TDEE - 20% ) Why am I doing 1200 instead of 1500? ...still too scared to move up! haha And as far as I can see my carbs are rarely over for 1500.

Anyway just some opinions if you dont mind.

i eat pasta 3-4 times a week, rice at least 2 times a week and potatoes the rest of the week.

While I try to eat whole wheat pasta and brown rice most of the times I do not.

I still lost and got to goal and maintained my losses.

Well, some people are more carb sensitive than other people. You could always try lowering the carbs and upping your protein intake to balance out and just test drive it for a couple weeks. Everyone's body reacts differently so the best way I feel is to just go for it and see if it helps. Just remember that carbs are good for you so dont drastically lower the number or cut them out completely. Well, thats my opinion :)

Wait...Hopefully I misunderstood...You weigh 7 stone and are trying to lose by eating below TDEE-20%? How tall are you?

Also, a plateau takes a lot longer than a week to establish.

You're 98 lbs looking to get smaller and wondering why eating 1200 calories isn't working for you? It's not the rice or the pasta, it's that you are most likely already underweight and your body has had enough.

I'm 4ft 8. So although 7 stone seems a bit crazy, I can assure you I'm still rather chunky! I'm child -sized. I would need to hit around 6 stone to be underweight. So I'm aiming for 6.5-ish.

Yeah, I'm doing the 1200 thing. Is that ridiculous? I reset my page to 1500 a month ago but have still YET to go for it. I'll have the odd 1300 day but man, the thought scares me.

Edit: In case anyone has seen my picture and thought " Wow...enough! " - Thats me in 2009, weighing roughly 6.5 stone. I'm still a good 7lbs from that.

Judging from your profile picture, TDEE - 20% is far too large a deficit for you, and you're doing even more than that since you're not even hitting that!

Even if you're 7lbs from your profile pic, that is still far too large of a deficit. And quite unnecessary.

Understood. I will be sure to aim above starting today then. Who wouldn't want to eat more? hah!

I used to be a carb addict. I still eat rice, but now I only eat brown or black rice maybe 3 times per week. And the best thing I have discovered so far is spaghetti squash. I eat it with homemade pasta sauce and parmesan, and it is awesome! It makes me feel like I am eating pasta.

    Agree.

You should consider that maybe you really don't need to lose more weight. Maybe a little body dismorphia going on?

The other thing is when people are like you say, 7 lbs from the ultimate goal, things move really slow. 2 weeks is not a plateau.

I assure you its not dismorphia. hehe, but some people assume it is. I'm going upstairs to take a picture. Not to be " pushy " but I want people to see what 7 stone looks like on a tiny body.

One more thing I feel I should also say ( and again, really not trying to sound aggressive, I appreciate EVERY post in this thread, and all of your wisdom. Its the only reason I've gotten this far! )

I have .perthes disease.. The head of my left hip has worn away, and left a flat edge and some cysts inside my femur. This means when I go for my yearly check up, almost every time I get a bit of stick for my weight. 3 years ago, I was 7 stone and was told: "You look great! Keep it up and try for 6.5 to ease weight off your bones " Needless to say I was gutted, that was my lowest weight at that point! lol

Honestly, a specialist recommended 6.5 stone ( minimum ) to ease my daily aches and pains and help my hip last longer before I need the replacement. No need to worry for me everyone! And thank you for your concern, I appreciate every bit of it.

Not losing for a week or two is not a plateau...that's just illustrative of the fact that weight loss isn't linear. Also, as others have said..with very little to lose you need to go slower...it should be slower. You don't have the fat stores to drop a bunch of weight quickly. Personally, more focus on body comp and less on actual scale weight would probably be a good idea.

If 1500 calories is your TDEE with a 20% deficit included then I would suppose it has more to do with chronic under eating then the rice and or pasta carbs.

    Thank you.

Well last night I had a little extra at dinner and tonight I'll also aim for 1300. Gradually upping a few calories a day until I hit 1500-1700 by next week. If I just jump into it and see that gain I'll panic.
