Old Garmin question

I have recently bought a Garmin and totally love it. My husband has found an old Garmin forerunner 610 that belonged to my son. He left it here when he went overseas and uses a different watch now. We've found the charger and got it going, but it needs a usb stick to connect to the internet to record runs etc. It doesn't have Bluetooth.
Can't find anywhere on the internet that explains what to do if you don't have the original usb. My son can't remember where it is or even if he even still has it.
Can I just buy a usb ANT stick and it will work with any Garmin? I've found where I can get these locally. Or do I need the actual original usb stick?
TIA for any help!
