Restarting my weight loss programme

In 2005 I lost 40kg in 9months. Sadly I put on alot more weight. I've decided to restart my weight loss programme. I weighed myself on Friday and I currently weigh 161kg.

Tomorrow I start back at the gym. My target calorific intake is 2000 cals. I'm wondering if this is too low. When I was exercising in the gym in 2005 I was doing 3 hours (2.5 hours of cardiovascular and 30 mins of resistance training). According to my Polar heart rate monitor I was burning ~ 1000 cals per session. I used to go to the gym every weekday morning at 5am before work.

I know the MFP method is eating back calories but this to me looked like my intake would be too high.

Suggestions and support appreciated please.

You know, if you ate 2000 calories and exercised for 1000 calories then effectively you've only eaten 1000 calories. Can you live on 1000 calories only? If you use a TDEE calculator it will give you calories for losing weight including your workouts. Though I'm wondering if a TDEE calculator can actually account for such a massive amount of exercise properly. I just had a look at some random calculator. If I use your weight and say a size of 180cm, then I get sedentary maintenance calories of around 3000. That seems to fit with a calorie deficit of 1kg per week and 2000 calories per day. Adding moderate exercise, according to this calculator you're at maintenance calories of 4000. Losing 1kg per week you'd be at 3000. So doesn't sound odd to me.

Think about your calorie balance and not your calorie intake in isolation.

Just like MyFitnessPal, average TDEE calculators and 24hr all trackers do to try and give you a sensible rate of loss.

e.g. Tom Daley will be eating 6,000+ calories for the next four days of his Comic Relief challenge and no doubt will still have his six pack at the end of the week.
