What's the difference?

What is the difference, in your opinion, between quitting a goal or standard and changing a goal or standard? And where is the line drawn between quitting and changing? I had this conversation with someone yesterday and have been thinking a lot about it.

For example, let's say I want to be a dancer (this example is purely hypothetical). I eat right, train, practice, do everything that I need to do in order to be a dancer. However, in spite of all of my work, I'm not getting anywhere. I feel like if I stopped, I'd be quitting because things got too difficult and I was running into obstacles. If that lifestyle makes me happy, why should I stop? The person I was talking to said that it's silly to keep holding myself to a standard that I'll never live up to, and it's not quitting necessarily, just changing focus.

A very dear friend of mine used to say: 'When all else fails: lower your standards'. :-D

Seriously... I suppose it depends on your motivation... sometimes in the past I've succeeded at things I've put my mind to just to please others - ultimately that's pretty unsatisfying. Of course any goal has to be realistic and achievable so it's fine to play around to moderate them to your own level. It's also fine to give up and do something else entirely. xxx
