Weight lifting burns calories! Why not estimate and track them?

It does. The "Strength Training" section in MFP exercise is just for tracking rep/set counts and weights. If you want the session calories added into your exercise total, go into the "Cardiovascular" section, and enter exercise session there.
For normal rep/set workouts, use the "Strength training (weight lifting, weight training)", using the whole session time (as long as you're using normal between-set rests; you'll want to back out any actual breaks you might've taken beyond the normal rest intervals, of course).
If you're doing some type of circuits, faster paced, higher reps, lower weight, maybe some embedded cardio intervals, use "Circuit training, general".
For bodyweight or functional-fitness type strength work, one of the "Calisthenics" options may be more suitable.4
