Alcohol free and losing weight

Today is 22 days no alcohol. Started treadmill 30-45 minutes and lifting weights slowly. So far, down 7.2 pounds. It has been years since I have gone so long without consuming mass amounts of wine and/or other spirits. I think this time will be different. Discovering my new normal has been a challenge. but so far, so good. The only problem, and a good one I think. is I am waking up at 4am and I don't start working from home until 6:30. So I have a lot of time to relax and reflect on my goals.

@jimwaters1016 I responded to your post on the old alcohol thread as well (though there you were writing to members on a thread that looked inactive since 2020). Anyway, congratulations on making the decision to go alcohol free! It should definitely help with weight loss and health over all. There are all sorts of positive resources that reinforce the healthy decisions you are making available in the marketplace these days, and a great deal of interest amongst “sober curious” people in trying out the lifestyle, much as there has been a shift to things like plant based eating and other ways of exploring different lifestyle choices for your health. If you haven’t already found those books and resources I’d be happy to recommend some if you think you would find them useful. Or just search sober curious and you’ll find a lot of options and see what you like.

As for the sleep disturbances, alcohol messes with your sleep cycles and it takes a while even after you stop drinking for your body to get back to fully normal rhythms and for you to get used to them. If you used to drink a lot you may not have been getting real REM sleep and if you are starting to experience it perhaps you are just waking up between different sleep cycles. I am definitely not an expert, but I wouldn’t worry about it and would use the time as you have been - to meditate, check in with your body and its rhythms - and maybe you will drift off for another morning nap before your usual wake up time, maybe not, but either way, you will have a restful morning before getting up and starting your day with a clear head.

Good luck and sending you positive vibes!
